Putting an End to Jaw Pain

What is TMJ Disorder?

If you’re experiencing frequent jaw pain or soreness whenever you open or close your mouth, including eating, speaking or even yawning, then you may be suffering from complications of the temporomandibular joint, commonly known as TMJ disorder. This is often caused by a misaligned bite, damage, inflammation or an overworked muscle in the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. When this joint is not working as it should, patients start feeling the painful effects in their jaw, cheeks, head, neck and shoulders. In severe cases of TMJ disorder, patients have experienced lockjaw, meaning they’re unable to open or close their mouth at all! Our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Howard Cooke, offers effective TMJ treatments in Dallas, TX, as well as surgery right here in our comfortable office. Applying modern technology, dental and medical training and considering more than just the jaw joint but the muscles and bones of the entire face, neck and back, Dr. Cooke takes a comprehensive approach to TMJ treatment plans. Dr. Cooke and our team at Metroplex Surgical Arts strive to correct these problems and get you back to a healthy, pain-free lifestyle.

What is the Cause of TMJ Disorder?

There are many potential causes of TMJ disorder, but the most common is an overactive jaw. For a number of patients, they unknowingly grind and clench their teeth at night or while under stress. This constant grinding puts pressure on the joint, making it sore, as well as damaging the teeth. For other patients, TMJ disorder can arise from damage to the jaw through an accident or misalignment of the jaw due to genetics or autoimmune diseases. No matter the cause, the inflammation of the tissue or grinding of the bones together can cause difficulty using the mouth and a daily struggle unless treated.

Our TMJ Solutions

TMJ disorder can be treated in multiple ways, both non-surgically and surgically depending on the severity of your case. For those who experience nighttime grinding and clenching, we can create a customized mouthguard that fits comfortably in the mouth and realigns the jaw to a comfortable position. Additionally, this mouthguard protects the teeth from damage.

For more serious cases of TMJ disorder, we can perform jaw surgery. This surgery will be used to reposition the jaw, correct muscles or tissue concerns. As an oral surgeon, Dr. Cooke has advanced training and education to understand the complexities of the jaw and how best to treat your TMJ concern.
